Ethics Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Ethics - Coursework Example The business world is adopting information technology (IT). This is the use of computers for data and information management, which results in new ethical concerns. It is, therefore, the responsibility of computer developers, users and other stakeholders to define what amounts to violation of the accepted ethical laws, prevention of unethical practices, and the remedy if such violation occurs. Various individuals have different reasons for adopting information technology (IT) in their daily activities, most of whom mean well, at least for themselves and their firms. These noble intentions may have a negative effect on others, and that is where computer ethics play a part. In addition, IT has brought with it new forms of criminal activities not clearly defined by existing laws. In fact, the laws defining IT related crimes quickly become obsolete due to the fast rate at which the technology and the vices that come with it are evolving (Lee and Chan, 2007). Approaches by Decision Makers and Those Affected In the attempt to join the computer revolution, managers, employees, customers, and shareholders have adopted the use of IT for various reasons, mostly to benefit themselves before the goodwill can spread to others. Everyone at the workplace stands to gain a lot from IT except those who stand to lose their jobs as a result. Managers want to ensure that their companies minimize costs and maximize profits in order to please shareholders and creditors. In addition, the management also wants to ensure they have all the relevant information, including the one easily overlooked by employees, before making critical decisions that affect both the present and the future business landscape of the firm. In summary, the management wants higher efficiency, and if possible, at a lower cost. The employees, on the other hand, want adoption of IT because of the better opportunities it has to offer. For those who have to beat targets, it is easier to reach their customers without having to meet them physically, and more customers can be served at a relatively shorter time as no time is wasted travelling to them. IT is also an excellent way of posting reports and book keeping regardless of the distance one is from the office. However, IT also has negative effects. First, the employees and management, in their quest for more customers and higher profits, resort to using illegal and unethical means to obtain customer information. Second, retrenchment starts once the management realizes it can make sales online with little or no help from salespeople. The idea that started as an admirable thing now results in sales people and most of the accounting staff losing their jobs. A reliable IT system can sell and do accounting analysis in no time, with little input from employees (Maurice, Schweitzer and Gibson, 2007). Conflicting Objectives of Business Leaders Beating competition, marketing, and ensuring the business prospers are the principal functions of efficient m anagement. In addition, the management should keep its employees in a favorable state of mind since they are the core drivers of the business. However, in their quest to fulfill their obligations to the business and the community, these business leaders become involved in some practices that go against the

International Trade and Investment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
International Trade and Investment - Essay Example The second part is the discusion about the possible privatization of ports and its effect in port charges and other pricing. The last part is the evaluation of two methods of depreciation used by these shipping companies. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has become an increasingly important part of the international economy. Due to the high mobility of the factors of production in the shipping industry, shipping investments in foreign subsidiaries do not necessarily imply strong links between the investment and the home and host countries. It is thus debatable whether the term Foreign Direct Investment should be utilised in the same manner as for other sectors. In a recent article last May 4th in South Africa, a current law implemented has a great impact in the sea freighting business, especially in the issue of massive maritime claims. A lot of shippers are foregoing their deposits due to the redelivery of hand back ships on charter. This critical situation that they are in can affect the acquisition of supply and meeting their foreign demands. The increasing inability in making use of the popular New York Rule B attachment procedure is helping South Africa regain its reputation as a jurisdiction in which shippers can seek assistance in obtaining security for their claims, or having obtained a judgment or arbitration award in their favour. This tangible mechanism in the shipping industry is making an advantage to shippers in their returns of investments due to substantial freight costs set from this procedure. This situation is a prelude of the sea port's privatization which greatly affects costs in shipping companies. Thus, increasing port charges for these companies. More than 50 countries privatised their port systems between 1991 and 1998. The common privatisation program includes the transfer of stevedoring, yard handling, pilotage, line handling and gate security to private port operators, while ownership and control of basic infrastructure remains with a public or quasi-public port authority. Also in a recent article last May 06, 2009, the Cape Town port terminals have performed well in the annual NOSA (National Occupational Safety Association) audits conducted in facilities operated by Transnet Port Terminals, taking their place alongside the sterling efforts of other state-owned

The Baitsoft Network Attack Simulated by Intel Essay Example for Free
The Baitsoft Network Attack Simulated by Intel Essay During the whole course of the simulation you will be acting as an external security investigator and being vigilant like in real life situation is a requisite. Itââ¬â¢s like getting into actual crime scene where investigators need to find things which could be treated as evidences for solving crimes. As it is only a computer-based simulation, paying attention to important details in every scene is very important. Relying on the voice of the characters in its scenes isnââ¬â¢t enough, and it is true in the real life situation, you also need to give particular attention to things around it. For instance, in most scenes you hear the characters talk then stop and do nothing else, and if you are not lucky enough to discover the tricks then you might end up hanging for few minutes waiting for the next lines. The secret is, move the mouse pointer around the details in the scenes like any suspicious figures such as: the Laptop and the PDA on Martin Dawes table, the magazine on the table in front of the receptionist section, the visitorââ¬â¢s log book also found in the receptionist section, the Whyte Board or shall we call it simply as the frame, and the firewall both located at the Server Room. Some important clues are also hidden in the speech lines of the characters. Paying attention to either heard or readable instruction is also very important in getting progress to the next scenes in the simulation. The simulation is giving users the experience of thrill, pressure, and suspense in real life handling of network security threats. Getting experience with using the IP Trace 2006 is a heart pounding situation. The most pressured section of the scenario is the scene where you need to help the IT manager create a virus definition which will be submitted to the security center. These experiences give the user an idea of how real life network security administrators race with every tick of the clock in handling different types of threats. There is a lesser suspense with accessing the CCTVsââ¬â¢s files, but it is time consuming as you have to roll out tapes for particular period of time intervals. The simulation also presented some method of how to ensure network securities. These are the common requisites of a secured network: firewalled, wireless networks must be secured; the network should be equipped with security tools. Aside from the technical and the software side of the story, network users should also have the right attitude ââ¬â sincerity, and having commitment to common objectives. Another thing is, in the realm of competition, some people are more likely to be inclined with adapting desperate measures such as stealing other peopleââ¬â¢s resources by any means in order to gain advantage. Security Issues Presented in the Simulation There are lots of security issues presented in the simulation such as: Port Scanning, Virus Injection into a network, Social Engineering, Warchalking/Wardriving, unauthorized torrent use or file sharing, and Packet Sniffing. Network securities are often compromised not because it is unsecured, but because somebody allowed it to be compromised. Like what happened in the simulation, there really exists what we commonly called as ââ¬Å"inside jobsâ⬠in some reported network attacks or in any criminal activities. In the simulation, Ian Siter, a newly hired Baitsoft project manager confessed his part of the whole crime. Another important detail is, he previously work with Daiytoââ¬â¢s Games Company, the primary competitor of Baitsoft, who also happened to be the primary suspect of the crime. Daiytoââ¬â¢s Games was caught port scanning the Baitsoft network as reported by the IP Trace 2006 Software. The scenario shows that anybody who has access to secured/unsecured network can become the means of any network attacks. This reality dictates that when putting people in critical positions within the organization, the management should be very careful. A network security is threatened by the accessibilities of software on the net. Some of these computer softwares which are intended for beneficial purposes are misused by some people having twisted minds in doing their hacking or stealing activities. This situation calls for strict monitoring and implementation of the rules and policies of how these tools should be used. Conclusion There always exist people who love to compromise other people. In the field of ensuring network security, the fundamental is keeping it secured technically, and most of all placing the right and trustworthy people in the position. Reference: CrimeScene. IBM. Fate in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet :: William Shakespeare Romeo and Juliet
"Two households, both alike in dignity, / In fair Verona, where we lay our scene, / From ancient grudge brakes to new mutiny, / Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. / From forth the fatal lions of these foes / A pair of star-crossed lovers take their life; / Whose misadventured piteous overthrows / Doth with their death bury their parentââ¬â¢s strife. / The fearful passage of their death-marked love, / And the continuance of their parentââ¬â¢s rage, / Which, but their childrenââ¬â¢s end, naught could removeâ⬠¦" -The Prologue, Romeo and Juliet (by William Shakespeare). Fate plays a major role in the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. The prologue describes Romeoââ¬â¢s and Julietââ¬â¢s fate, which we see come up many times later on in the play. Throughout the play, Romeo and Juliet unwittingly realize they cannot exist in such reality and that a tragic fate awaits them. The two families, the Montagues and the Capulets continue being rivals all the way to the end of the play until the inevitable event takes its place. In the play, there are many pieces of evidence that further present the prologueââ¬â¢s sad foretold reality. Even as early as the first scene of the play, we already see some evidence to back up the prologue. "[Romeo]â⬠¦And makes himself and artificial night." (I, i, 38) This passage can be seen as the foreshadowing of Romeoââ¬â¢s suicide. Another line said by Montague, which is "Unless good council may the cause remove" (I, i, 140), also is evidence of Romeoââ¬â¢s tragedy. In the first act, Romeo is introduced. His great sadness is shown right away and the theme of love is seen as well. Through Romeoââ¬â¢s mellow mood we see how desperate he is for love. Romeo is in love with Juliet, which is the daughter of an enemy to the house of Montagues. Fate is definitely involved here, and this innocent love is the first step in a chain of events that lead to the fate driven tragedy. In the same scene, Tybalt is infuriated with Romeo. He is ready to kill h im and believes that Romeo is his sworn enemy. Tybalt. This, by his voice, should be a Montague Fetch me my rapier, boy. What, dares the slave Come hither, covered with an antic face, To fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honor of my kin, To strike him dead I hold not a sin.

The Story of My Life in 400 Words
Let me start off by saying that writing essays isnââ¬â¢t really my cup of tea. I find it really difficult to begin as there are so many different ways to do it. I can start with, ââ¬Å"One dayâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ but then it would be too common. Finding the right way to start a composition, for me, is the most taxing thing in the world to do. Then, thereââ¬â¢s also the problem of choosing which items to include and disregard. If the limit of words is four hundred then I must choose the words carefully. Otherwise, I might go over without getting my message across. Do you understand my dilemma? You might find this weird coming from someone who makes students write their stories. If they would only find out then that would make me the laughing-stock of the whole school. I wonââ¬â¢t waste your time anymore with this senseless talk and start with what Iââ¬â¢m supposed to write about. Everything started one Monday morning in November of 1975. This was when I made my entry to this world. I believe I made my parents really happy just by being here. Then there was elementary. Itââ¬â¢s where I learned about social interaction. I discovered that if Iââ¬â¢m nice to people then Iââ¬â¢ll make more friends but if Iââ¬â¢m not, then life will be lonely and miserable. From high school I learned that spending some time in making myself look presentable is important if I want to attract the attention of people from the opposite sex. Oh, yes! Thereââ¬â¢s also college. In the university, I learned that we really live in a dog eat dog world. Competition is stiff and you must learn to cope otherwise you wonââ¬â¢t survive. Despite of this, I learned to really fall in love for the first time. I wonââ¬â¢t really go into too much details as I would have to write another 400-word composition for this topic alone. After college, I tried my hand on a lot of different things. Off the top of my head, I remember working as a project assistant, administrative assistant, senior clerk and customer service representative to name just a few. It wasnââ¬â¢t until I tried my hand on teaching that I found my calling. Teaching is not for the weak of heart. You must be able to endure several heartaches and some disappointments before you can reap its rewards. But mind you, the rewards are tremendous. Being able to make a difference in the lives of your students is what it really is about. I canââ¬â¢t think of any other way to live my life.

Principles And Concepts Of Accounting - 2338 Words
Principles and Concepts of Accounting Name Institution Introduction The major accounting principles that guide accounting practices are endorsed on the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This is an international guidelines that all the companies and organizations are expected to apply in their operations. These principles are further classified into assumption and constraints. The assumption principles include business entity, going concern, monetary unit and time period assumption principles (Hendrick, 2011). Other principles listed in the GAAP include historical cost, revenue recognition principle, and matching, and full disclose principles. On the other hand, constraints are also divided into objectivity principle, materiality principle, consistency principle, and conservatism principle (Weygandt J. J., 2012).
